Hi all,
So... I'm not in the best mental space right now. I'm
sure I'll feel better come Friday when my staycation
commences... even though it means puppy-sitting which likely
means having to be super-alert. But for right now I just
feel like playing around on tvtropes so that's what this
newsletter is. However... I also have a note at
the end regarding some sensitive current events related to a
couple of characters that I adopted into the Dyeland/Asteriana
stories. It's clearly marked so feel free to skip that
if you're not into the stories. It's just an all-around
bad situation. Just thought I'd put that out there as
it's a pretty radical mood shift from the other content but I
wanted to say something and just wasn't sure how else to get
it out there.
Anyway... take care!
God bless,
Jenni
Sort Of Random Tropes But With Some
Themes Because I Felt Like It
All stories linked here: http://www.miscjabb.onthisside.net/storyindex.html
Divine
Birds- I've covered this one before but it pre-dated
Tawera. She's the kererū who pals around with Karl.
While the fact that Karl seems to communicate with her could be
dismissed as him being his eccentric self, it's much less clear
how she manages to go to and from Asteriana. So...
Something will be revealed!
Noble
Bird of Prey- Speaking of birds... Joshua takes many
forms but one is an albatross, a bird of prey. And you
can't get much more noble than the King of Kings.
The Phoenix- Yes, I'm still on the Avian Index. No
literal phoenixes appear in the stories. However, the
Phoenix Inn takes its name from the myth of the phoenix arising
from its own ashes as women go there to rebuild their lives and
emerge with greater healing and peace.
Thanksgiving
Turkey- Inherited from TBAA, in JABB's earlier years, Adam
and his turkeys featured more prominently around
Thanksgiving-time. And I'm sure Willowveil is all decked
out with turkey decor to this day as is Adam's home with Clay
and Kylie and their kids in Albany. But as for literally
eating a Thanksgiving turkey... No. I think Adam has
converted everyone over to turkey-like substance at this point.
Okay, leaving the bird stuff alone now...
Staying
with the Suffering- This happens a lot and, early on, was
one of JenniAnn's rallying cries. Her main gripe with
Monica and Tess was that they did NOT stay with Andrew when he
was suffering. So she took every opportunity she
could! One example was her basically moving into Andrew's
house when he returned from Afghanistan in "Abide With
Me." She and a bunch of the Dyeland ladies moved to West
Hollow in "Safe" to keep Andrew company during a difficult
assignment. Ditto in "We Trust to Thee." And, of
course, Andrew has returned the favor many times over. But
it's not just between Andrew and the ladies. When Emma had
her breakdown in "The Carpenter," Joshua and Co. took her back
to Cora's house so she wouldn't come out of her hangover
alone. Joshua himself usually has company whenever he's
upset because none of the Friends want to relive the apostles'
mistake in Gethsemane. Takoda temporarily moves near Joccy
after her suicide attempt. In "Broken Hallelujahs,"
Ana-Maria refuses to turn away from Kyle even though he broke up
with her after she learns about the abuse he suffered. In
the same story, Joshua stays near Mason for the same reason even
after he angrily lashes out.
Another Dimension- Well, obviously. Both Asteriana
and El-Chanan are other dimensions in the colloquial
sense. In the proper sense, the portals are other
dimensions and other than the fact that God is in charge of
them, how they actually work is much too complicated for
me! If C.S. Lewis didn't need to explain the physics,
neither do I!
Catholic School Girls Rule- Largely subverted. I may
be forgetting someone but the only Catholic school girls in the
stories that immediately come to mind for me are JenniAnn, Emma,
Ivy, Joccy, and Zoe. The only one who could conceivably be
considered to have been promiscuous is Emma. But that was
a trauma response so feels much different from what this trope
is going for. But I do think it's fair to say that none of
them got really solid sex ed in school which did lead to some
issues. For Emma, Ivy, and Joccy, it leads to a lot of
shame. In Ivy's case, it was more about her grandma's
disappointment/anger about her mother having her out of
wedlock. But for Emma and Joccy it was internalized.
Meanwhile, JenniAnn has fared pretty well but is now over 40 and
sometimes still has to have Andrew explain sex stuff to her so
she can have what information she needs for their kids.
Zoe's kinda in the background but I imagine she had to be
impacted by her older sister's struggles quite a bit.
Wonder
Child- To some extent, I think Avi and Violeta are both
wonder children to Andrew and JenniAnn. The former has a
completely mundane origin story. Vonnie conceived him with
her then-boyfriend, panicked, and left him in the hopes he would
be cared for. Violeta is... not so mundane. On the
surface, she seems like an ordinary angel until Joshua reveals
the following:
"So
many of your [JenniAnn's] friends were pairing
off and you felt so alone... you felt stuck
with a lifelong crush who you weren't totally
sure even existed. In your loneliness,
you cried out to me. Feeling
misunderstood and as if there was no one else
you could talk to about what you were feeling,
you asked that one day I would allow you to
help someone through such heartbreak... help
them to feel understood. Then you cried
yourself to sleep...
At that very same moment, you were
praying, too, Andrew. Monica and Tess
had been especially chummy that day. In
truth, it was just the latest in a series of
cases when you felt like the odd man
out. With tears in your eyes, you
thanked me for allowing you to work with them
but you also asked that, one day, you would be
able to work with someone who cared for you as
much as you cared for them...
You didn't know it then but I answered
both your prayers immediately. I took
the longing and compassion and love that
comprised them and, with some violets thrown
in, I made a loving, compassionate, sweet,
little angel. That night was April 18,
1997."
And that is Violeta's birthday. Which
probably makes Violeta a closer match to the
trope since Andrew and JenniAnn were both
childless at the time she was born whereas by
Avi's birth, they had four other kids and a
grandchild. Still, Avi matches the trope
in other ways. He's got some sort of
extra-sensory powers going on.
Themed
Party- I speculated about Joshua... or
should I say Lord Joshua Bethelton of
Nazareth-upon-Jordan... throwing a Bridgerton
party at Willowveil. It never actually
made it into a story but I suspect he followed
through. Naturally, it was very
G-rated.
Awkwardly
Gay Dream- It's not that Ed thought he was
straight. He knew he was asexual as all
angels are. But he didn't think he had any
romantic inclinations until he had a romantic
dream about Steve. And the rest is
history.
Dream
Tells You To Wake Up- Just happened!
Avi seemingly called to Andrew in his dream to
get him to wake up in "The Haunting of
Willowveil" which also happens to be a Dream
Intro. Really more like a Nightmare
Intro...
Dream
Walker- The above suggests that, possibly,
Avi is one. But it's not really clear
whether Avi actually shared part or all of his
dad's dream or if he was just able to enter
Andrew's dream long enough to call him out of
it. It's possible Avi didn't see the dream
at all but just has some sort of
telepathy. As mentioned before, Andrew and
JenniAnn were both able to truly dream walk
(thanks to God) while he was in Afghanistan so
you never know.
Fantasy
Keepsake- I feel like this has happened
but I just can't place it? It's possible
I'm thinking of Joshua giving people things
thought long-lost in their past. I
dunno...
Nightmare
Weaver- Nen and Tzila were able to do this
to the Friends in "Shadowlands."
Clashing
Cousins- JenniAnn and her cousin,
Veronica, are this. It comes to a head in
"The Maiden, the Angel of Death, and the
Ineffable Husbands" when Andrew lets Veronica
have it for trying to get JenniAnn to socialize
during COVID lockdown.
Fantastic
Naming Convention- It doesn't come up much
any more but at least a couple of the Asterians
used acronyms to form last names when they moved
to Earth. A minor character in the past
was Dr. Matt Socad which stood for Son of Cliff
and Daisy. A current character is Fr. Mike
Solas with his last name coming from Son of
Lewellyn and Sibyll. It seems to no longer
be in practice since Andrew's and JenniAnn's
kids have Chandler-Darcy as their last
name. But some of the native Asterians'
kids may still keep it up.
And I think I'll leave it there.
A Note about Crowley and Aziraphale
So I've gone through
several different iterations of the following over the last few
months and none of them seemed quite right. So I'm just
going to write from my heart and hope it comes across okay.
Yes, I am aware of the allegations against Neil Gaiman.
Yes, I believe the victims. No, I don't intend to excise
Crowley and Aziraphale from the stories. And here's
why...
They don't belong to him.
Yes, he is one of the co-authors. Yes, he was the main
writer (though not the sole writer) for the TV show which is
where I'm drawing the characterizations from since, to be
honest, I never read the book (or any Gaiman book).
But that still doesn't mean that he owns Crowley and
Aziraphale. For one, the book was co-written by Sir
Terry Pratchett. For another, it was then the
performances of David Tennant and Michael Sheen who brought
them to life and made me want to include them in my
stories. Further... Crowley and Aziraphale are based off
of two characters in the Bible so... I'm not saying God
wrote Good Omens. But I am saying that whatever
the religious beliefs of anyone I've thus far mentioned are...
I believe Good Omens could not exist without the real
Serpent and the real Angel of the Eastern Gate and so, in some
respects, this is no different than if I found out something
awful about Fr. Girzone who wrote the Joshua books or,
God forbid, C.S. Lewis. We're all just playing in the
same sandbox with different iterations of the same characters.
I also... and this is getting a little personal... have really
strong memories and, sure, maybe even lingering resentment
surrounding punishing a wide group of people over the wrong
actions of one person or subgroup. When I was in grade
school, I was outright told I was in a "bad class." And
a lot of the other kids did get unruly and wouldn't
listen. But there was always a handful of us who
did. But when a teacher or staff member declared that
the entire class had to change their color (we had a system
wherein you started with green then if you committed an
infraction it moved to yellow and if you messed up a second
time it went to red and you had detention), I would get really
upset. It seemed bad enough that I had to put up with
all the noise and chaos but then to be punished for it,
too? I know teachers have a hard job, maybe even the
hardest, but that still stings. Because it made me feel
so powerless and like being good didn't matter. If you
just brush up against badness then you're bad, too.
Obviously, I've grown up and reject all that. But to
pretend it didn't cause some psychological issues... well,
that would be a big lie. So I suppose that's another
reason why I won't cast out Crowley and Aziraphale. It
would feel like changing the color of Mr. Tennant's, Mr.
Sheen's, and Sir Pratchett's cards when I have no reason to
believe they had any idea about Gaiman's actions. I know
people like to say "Well, surely they HAD to know..." but I've
had enough awful surprises pop up in my own social circles to
know that idea is irresponsible and dangerous. People
most assuredly do NOT always know what family members,
friends, and colleagues get up to when they're away from them.
There's not been one time I've been writing for Crowley or
Aziraphale and thought "Would Gaiman do this?" Because I
know he wouldn't and I don't care. I know he's not
trying to write a family drama through a queer Christian
lens. It's the same way as I know Andrew Lloyd-Weber
would hate the Friends' version of JCS because it's too
devout. Don't care. Fanworks can and do sometimes
reject the sentiments/actions of the original creators.
And I think that's fine. While I can feel grateful to
everyone who inspired a piece of the Dyeland/Asteriana lore, I
don't feel beholden to them. It's not like I'm making
any money, after all.
What I will say is that it's exhausting and demoralizing
having to repeatedly reckon with the bad actions of some men
and to think about what their victims experienced. I
know that my angst about having to write this is nothing
compared to what survivors and their loved ones face.
But I'm sick of being a woman who has to constantly reckon
with how unsafe we are while just trying to enjoy a TV show or
book or whatever. So I will continue to write Aziraphale
and Crowley as being affirming and empathetic and, sure,
feminist. It's my personal form of protest, of showing
power. I already have scenes plotted out that involve
them and to remove those would, to me, be letting him force my
hand. And I won't have that.
At a later date, I might address some of this in a fictional
form. I've been wanting to write about JenniAnn dealing
with the fall of a literary hero ever since She Who Must Not
Be Named decided to worship chromosomes. So this is
kinda the last push I needed for that. However, "The
Prodigal" feels more important so it likely won't happen until
after that. And that won't happen til well after the
Valentine's Vignettes... only one of which I have
plotted. But that one involves a lady of some strength
and power who tried to stand up to a powerful man and thought
she failed. But she didn't and that's why we still
remember her to this day.
If you have been a fan of Neil Gaiman and are looking for
someone else to turn to, I highly recommend Tanith Lee.
Her writing is just absolutely luscious. Some of my best
memories are the first few years I spent in my house when I,
somehow, had more time for reading. I devoured The
Silver Metal Lover and Biting the Sun and Red
as Blood. The latter even features a cameo from
someone very familiar...
Anyway, I've said my peace now. My thoughts are with
those directly impacted. I hope they have all the
support and love they need.
This newsletter is dedicated to John Dye
for being an upstanding guy. I'm so glad and relieved
I never had to make a statement about him.
