Hi all,
Firstly, I'm glad I'm able to send this! I woke up to
a screeching noise seemingly emanating from my laptop which
I thought meant it was dying. Thankfully, it turned
out just to be my battery back-up/ surge protector. So
yay for a functioning laptop!
Secondly, I really and truly am back to working on "The
Advocate" but am continuing to have some memory
issues. I'm hoping it's just from going into
over-drive with some house projects that I am slowly but
surely finishing. And it could also very well be my
beloved but very distracting dog... So... if anyone
would like to lend a hand with reading stuff as I finish it
to let me know if I inadvertently contradicted myself,
please let me know. I'd really appreciate it!
I hope everyone is staying safe wherever you are! So
much going on weather and otherwise around the world...
God bless,
Jenni
So I'm still kinda hung up on the Barbie movie which
made me think about how I've really not done a very good job
of paying attention to physical descriptions of
characters. In a way, I like that because then the
reader has fewer limitations on their imagination. But I
do think costuming is such an important part of visual
storytelling and I do miss having access to that in
storytelling that is strictly written. I seem to only
ever mention what a character is wearing when it's important
to the plot but their overall style can convey so much about
them. So... I decided to do a rundown on some
characters' fashion senses. Here goes...
The Friends and
Their Fashion
Firstly, the people whose wardrobe I think is the least
changed from the characters they were based on:
Aziraphale- I honestly can't imagine him in anything but the
beige and tan vests and suits with tartan elements that we
know from Good Omens. I assume he has to have
some sort of dressed down clothing for when the Friends do
something messy but maybe not since he can miracle away
stains... or at least Crowley can for him. The idea of
Aziraphale in jeans seems scandalous. Maybe he has some
light linen pants for very informal occasions?
Vincent- From the waist up, I don't think anything has changed
from the Vincent of the 80s. Still with the sweaters and
layered shirts and the hooded cloak for warmth.
However... Vincent is almost 70. I really doubt he's
wearing tight denim and leather pants any more. And I'm
not saying that because I think people in their sixties
shouldn't wear those things. I honestly don't
care. I just know that I've had way less trauma to my
body than Vincent has and at 41 it's not even comfy for me to
try to contort my legs to get into tight jeans. So he
probably wears normal jeans and even sometimes fleece pants.
Tess- When she appears amongst the Friends, I don't think she
looks any different from how we knew her on TBAA. Still
with the statement jewelry and bold colors. Unlike many
of the other angels these days, Tess always looks put
together.
Now for those with some more significant tweaks:
Crowley- I don't at all think Crowley ever gives up his black
and leather pieces. But I do think some softer things
get brought in... like the top he borrows from JenniAnn.
And maybe occasionally he borrows pieces from Aziraphale
because that's very cute to think about. I also hope he
has comfortable pajamas for his epic naps. That's the
thing I wish most for him: that he lets his guard down enough
that he doesn't feel the need to look cool.
Catherine- Because she's largely retired, I think she's
forever put away the power suits with shoulder pads of her
youth. Since she lives in the Tunnels now, her wardrobe
is largely fleece leggings and warm sweaters and tunics.
But she likely has two or three modern ladies' suits for when
she goes to an event Above for her friend, Joe, or to support
the Phoenix Inn or any of the Friends-associated charities.
Adam- Adam has definitely gone more casual. Those suits
on a farm with a bunch of kids would be a terrible idea.
But he still, obviously, wears them for when he does his AOD
work and probably also for attending church on Sundays with
the Romano and Stanford clans. But otherwise I think he
wears jeans frequently, paired with seasonable tops ranging
from T-shirts to flannel shirts to sweaters.
Andrew- I think he's basically what we saw on TBAA but with an
uptick in days spent in pajama pants and T-shirts when in
strictly dad mode. But he still has access to plenty of
suits for his AOD work and more upscale occasions with
JenniAnn and the Friends. However, unless the locations
require it, he's probably more apt to be in jeans and flannel
for outings with JenniAnn than a suit given that's her
preference. That's likely also his usual director's
uniform these days.
Monica- While I'm sure she still enjoys
dressing up, I think she's also shifted to a more casual mode
at this point. All those sundresses of hers that I
envied just don't make a whole lot of sense when she's running
a food truck. I think she spends most of her days in
jeans and blouses or leggings and tight-sleeved tunics that
won't dip into the food. But, as with Andrew and
JenniAnn, I'm sure Monica and Arthur have date nights and
dresses make appearances during those.
And everyone else:
Joshua- He wears mostly jeans and comfy sweaters or flannel
when it's colder. Lightweight plaid and cream/tan button
downs or just solid tees when it's warmer. I think he
sometimes utilizes light linen pants and tunics for when he's
trying to hearken back to the Incarnation but in a not too
obvious way. There are some nighttime scenes in "The
Advocate" where Joshua is being inconspicuous so I think then
he might tend more towards navy and black tops. I also
think that if he's really trying to bond with someone, he'd be
apt to choose an outfit that reflects their preferred color
palettes in a subtle way. Like he's not going to wear a
hot pink suit to endear himself to someone who loves hot
pink. But he'd probably wear his standard jeans with a
pink T-shirt under gray flannel or similar.
JenniAnn- With five kids and two grandkids and some
responsibilities teaching Below, I think JenniAnn maintains
her love of color but now more in the form of leggings and
tunics than dresses. They're just more practical and
easier to wash. That being said, she still enjoys
dressing up, especially if Andrew is involved. And I
think when the two of them take to their cabin in the Fields
of Gold alone, the flowy, soft, silky long dresses of her
Princess JenniAnn era make a return.
Max- Because he's a psychiatrist, I think he's one of the few
members of his family to not basically live in jeans and
casual clothes. I think he wears a lot of neutral
colored slacks and buttoned shirts with ties. He
actually probably dresses more like the Andrew of the 90s
often did than the current Andrew does. But when he does
have time off, I imagine he wears lots of fantastically nerdy
T-shirts.
Maryam- I have a really hard time imagining Maryam wearing
jeans. I imagine her wearing beautiful broomstick skirts
with perfectly coordinated tops or dresses like one might see
on Holy Clothing for dressier occasions.
Yosef- I think he fully embraces the Man Working at
Lowe's/Home Depot look. T-shirts, flannel, fleece,
and denim with work boots.
Joccy- I pretty much always envision her as wearing
dark-washed jeans with close-fitted solid tops that don't pull
attention away from the necklace that Takoda gave her that she
wears every day now. When she's Below, I think she adds
one of those cute midriff sweaters or sweatshirts over her
other top so her arms are covered in the chill.
Violeta and Shelby- I put them together because I'm sure they
share clothes. Both enjoy thrifting but I think their
favorite thing is raiding JenniAnn's old clothes and plucking
out the pieces that have seen a surge in popularity or that
they just plain like. Like JenniAnn, they love
color. One trend I see them really enjoying is pairing
colorful overalls (or the short version) with body-hugging
multi-colored striped shirts. Max probably refers to
them as the Mario Sisters when they do that but they don't
care. Since Shelby resembles JenniAnn, I'm sure Andrew's
done some double-takes when she shows up at the breakfast
table looking like early aughts JenniAnn.
