Hi
all,
Welcome to October! As spooky season is upon us, I
thought it'd be fun to consider how Andrew might view
various Halloween-friendly movies and shows. Of
course, this is limited by what I've seen. I may do a
part two if I watch anything else between now and two weeks
from now.
Also, just a heads up that for at least the month of
October, newsletters are going to be quite short.
October is super busy at my workplace (sadly not for
Halloween-related reasons) AND I'd like to start writing
"The Advocate" so free time will be scarce.
God bless,
Jenni
Andrew's Takes on Halloween Movies and Shows
Hocus Pocus (the original)- Andrew is a fan. It's
not particularly ghoulish and the music is fun. He
enjoys the 90s references as the 1990s were pretty important
to him given he reunited with Tess then and met Monica.
But, mostly, he enjoys it because all the kids love it and
they gather around and watch it together. It's not too
often any more that either Violeta or Shelby snuggle up
against him so any time they do is a blessing. (PS- I'm
hoping to watch the sequel tonight!)
Lady in White- He'll watch it with JenniAnn and only
JenniAnn. It's a remnant of her childhood so every 2 or
3 years she likes revisiting it on Halloween and while she'd
never pressure him to watch it, he always offers because it's
still quality time with her. It reminds him of too many
assignments which makes it a little difficult.
The Conjuring movies- Andrew has definite thoughts on
the veracity of those movies... and the Warrens. But
they're enjoyable enough and he's not against spending an
entire movie with JenniAnn clutching one of his arms and
occasionally burying her face in his chest or shoulder.
Anything from the Flanaverse- Again, he'll watch with JenniAnn
and only JenniAnn and have Jamie on speed dial. Maryam
has begun sneaking into Willowveil whenever a new Mike
Flanagan series premieres and leaving a stack of clean
handkerchiefs on Andrew's bedside table for the
occasion.
Midnight Mass specifically-
Oof. Andrew probably adds Reuel and Fr. Mike to his
speed dial for that one. He thinks its take on religion
is nuanced and beautiful but, boy, does it do a number on
JenniAnn. And that rendition of "Abide With Me" really
makes both Andrew and JenniAnn emotional because it reminds
them of when he was in Afghanistan. And I think Andrew
would be a little uncomfortable with a certain plotline
involving priestly celibacy because while I very much don't
think he would have done what a certain character does to
subvert that... maybe he doesn't want to think too much about
how things would have gone had God not orchestrated the whole
anam cara thing. In short... lots of introspection, not
much sleep.
The Witch- 10/10. Would watch again! I
mean, no, he didn’t actually like the movie (Satan is
bad!) but the thirty minute lecture about anti-goat
propaganda that JenniAnn delivered after was spirited and
adorable. He’d watch that again… and then buy her
another goat because his love language is buying his lady
livestock.
Coraline- he loves watching it with the older kids and
looks forward to sharing it with Belle and Avi when they’re
older… but he can’t figure out why it makes him think of
Aziraphale and Crowley…
Children of the Corn- Not Andrew's cup of tea but, as
with The Witch, he gets a kick out of seeing his
Nebraskan anam cara get huffy about its portrayal of
Nebraska. And corn.
This newsletter is dedicated to John Dye
for bringing to life my "comfort character." I hadn't
heard that term until the last few months but Andrew is
definitely that for me.
