"Work
hard, be kind, and amazing things will happen."
- - Conan O'Brien
Hi all,
Tomorrow is Labor Day here in the States and so I thought I'd go
for a work-themed issue. I'm also hoping to enjoy the
extra day off of work myself so, admittedly, went with what was
easy... tropes and scrapbook scans. :-) Nonetheless,
I hope you enjoy!
God bless,
Jenni
Work-Related
Tropes in Dyeland Stories
Mean
Boss- No, I'm not counting Tess although
sometimes... Plus, she wasn't really the boss.
But Andrew, Adam, and Henry were assigned to a real Mean
Boss in
"Tidings of Comfort and Joy." Andrew was again
assigned to a mean boss and, really, an entire group of mean
colleagues in "Fun
at Willowveil."
The
Shrink- Amber-Marie is definitely of the Awesome
Shrink variety. Along those lines, Vincent sometimes
becomes a Psychologist
Teacher and Andrew was all over that title in "Ivy."
Muse
Abuse- Grown-up writer Shelby is committed to
subverting this. She camouflages some details and uses
fake names when it comes to telling the story of her family
and the Friends in "The Anam Cara Chronicles."
New Job as the Plot Demands- This is inherited from
TBAA. While some of the angels have focused in on
specific careers in the Dyeland-verse (Monica runs a food
truck, Andrew is a carpenter, Kelly is a social worker),
they could also still find themselves as doctors, lawyers,
writers, etc. as an assignment demands.
Office
Romance- Well, more of a general work place
romance. Peter and Emma started dating while working
together at St. G's. Kylie/Clay and Ivy/Sy also came
out of the original JCS production although they weren't
actually working together. Briefly, Andrew and
JenniAnn worked together in the NYC district attorney's
office and were the subject of some office gossip due to the
latter's crush on the former. In the future, Jacob and
Daisy begin a romance whilst working together.
Ultimate
Job Security- If we're going to be completely honest,
everyone employed by Vincent has this. While I try to
account for the Tunnel teachers' class schedules, if the
plot demands then Vincent will arrange for someone or even
himself to cover for them. I don't think many work
places or bosses would put up with as many absences and the
emotional neediness of employees. I'm looking at you,
JenniAnn... who seems to sometimes have a One-Hour
Work Week.
Atonement
Detective- This has Mick St. John written all over it.
The Commissioner Gordon- Angels...
superheroes... What's the difference? D.A. Joe
Maxwell, Detective Matthew Bratton, and Officer Tyron
Billings share this role. They routinely aide and abet
the Friends on assignments, giving them more help and cover
than they would some random do-gooder citizen. They
keep their involvement quiet not because the Friends are bad
but because it's necessary to keep the roles of angels,
vampires, and, oh yeah, Jesus Christ quiet.
Courtroom Episode- With the much-anticipated Andrew on
trial TBAA episode never happening, "Nor
Iron Bars a Cage" used that plot. It features
numerous courtroom scenes with Tess defending Andrew.
Doctor's
Orders- Dr. Talson had the unenviable task of trying
to get both Andrew and JenniAnn to focus on taking care of
themselves after his traumatic brain injury and her gun shot
wound. He was largely obeyed though not without some
angst.
Benevolent
Boss- God, of course! Arthur, Vincent,
Catherine, Peter and Emma, Dusty, Randall, and others are
all quite nice, too.
Work-Related Prayers from Andrew's
Scrapbook
I collected prayers related to assorted
occupations that Andrew held during TBAA. Then,
naturally, I scrapbooked em. Here are about half of
the pages.
This newsletter is dedicated to John Dye who
brought so much compassion, faith, and love to his
work.
