1.
"Love Who You Love"-
Roger Rees in The Man of No
Importance- Just threw this on cause I had time on the CD and
it's where the opening quote comes from.
2. "Stor Mo Chroí"- Mary McLaughlin and William Coulter-
This was the last song I put on cause I realized I still had time on
the CD and that LJA didn't have a song. An Irish song about
leave-taking. Andrew once sang it at LJA's request so it seemed
like a good one to serve as backdrop for their parting ways.
3. "Dvořák's: Serenade For Strings, Op. 22 Moderato"- As
with last year, I went with an upbeat classical piece for Nigel.
Unlike last year, I deliberately set out to find a composer who worked
during the Victorian Era. Apparently Dvořák did.
4. "Valentine"- Martina McBride- Yvette chose this one and I
think it works really well for Yva's and Sir Sven's interview.
5. "You've Got a Friend"- James Taylor- I just really like this
song. It's reminded me of Andrew for quite a while and seemed a
good fit for Rose's segment on friendship and love.
6. "The Circle Game"- Joni Mitchell
I'm not positive but I think the BatB episode title "Promises of
Someday" came from this song. True or not, it's why I chose this
for the Wells family. With the talk about growing up and family,
this made a lot of sense to me for them. Plus Vincent and Devin
had that carousel connection. I like to imagine Catherine and
Vincent take Jacob there sometimes, too.
7. "The Candy Man"- Sammy Davis, Jr. & Mike Curb
Congregation- For Willy, of course. I think this is a really fun
version of the song.
8. "Mercy"- OneRepublic- I had no idea what to choose for
Andi. I wanted to go contemporary since she's one of the youngest
people interviewed. Can't go wrong with OneRepublic, in my
opinion.
9. "Just Like You"- Keb' Mo'- I thought of this song when I was
reading Liz's answers for Henry. The part where Henry talks about
feeling more human among his human friends, specifically, made me think
of this song.
10. "C.S. Lewis Song"- Brooke Fraser- I wasn't sure what to
choose for Lady Beth. This is one of my current favorite "God
songs" so it works! The part that starts "We are not long here"
gives me goosebumps. It also makes me think of the whole time
capsule imagery that surfaces during Willy's interview.
11. "We'll Meet Again"- Vera Lynn- Okay, this was *really* the
last song I added. I kept thinking the scene of Eli and JenniAnn
talking about the War really needed a song. So further putzing
around iTunes turned this up. I thought it was beautiful and
worked on so many levels including Eli and Sophia continuing on after
losing so many friends and then Eli losing Sophia to Alzheimer's yet,
both times, holding close to the hope of reunion.
12. "Un Giorno Per Noi"- Josh Groban
The love theme for Zeffirelli's take on Romeo and Juliet. A
tragic love song for a tragic couple (Josef and Sarah).
13. "The One I Love"- R.E.M.
So I realized that the previous Valentine's story was preceded by a
sorta troubling Andrew and LJA scene that used R.E.M. ("Losing My
Religion") as the backdrop. I wanted to reprise that. On
the surface
this song seems nice and full of longing but when I really looked at
the lyrics I thought it was actually pretty jaded and basically about
someone conning a person into believing they loved them and then
ditching them. This isn't so much about characters as they
actually
are but how Andrew might have interpretted LJA's feeling when he
received that letter. And maybe I just wanted to include R.E.M.
song. ;-)
14. "Love Remains the Same"- Gavin Rossdale
This was the last song "Moonlight" introduced me to. It was
played when Mick and Beth seemed to really get together at what turned
out to be the end of the series. So this is their song to me.
15. "Shine"- The Wilshires- When it came time to choose Adam's
song I think I had only one song with any female vocalists. So I
knew I needed more than that. And this song really works for him,
I think. I mean look at the lyrics:
http://www.thewilshires.net/tracks/shine.php. It's totally
Adam! He's a maverick in the best sense of the word!
16. "It's Alright"- Sara Hickman- I found this just clicking
around iTunes. The sound of the crickets seemed so fitting for
the scene of Andrew and Tess sitting on her porch. And the lyrics
seem very Tess-like to boot.
17. "Feels Like Home"- Randy Newman- So once upon a time I wanted
the Linda Ronstadt version of this played at my wedding. So you
may wonder how I ended up using it as the song that says how Andrew
feels about Dyeland. Well... no offense to Randy Newman but for
some reason him singing it (and it's his song originally) made me think
less of romance and more of friendship. And while I don't
typically think of Andrew's heart beating fast or wanting to lose
himself in someone (although the more I think about it I can think of
several non-romantic reasons he'd experience both), I think the overall
message of finding a sense of home with someone is a theme we've really
been working with in Dyeland.
18. "Pennies from Heaven"- Bing Crosby, Frances Langford, Louis
Armstrong- I've always wanted a scene where someone danced into
Heaven. So this one's for Eli's and Sophia's dance. And if
you look up the lyrics it's really so appropriate for them with a theme
of beauty coming from misfortune and putting up with the bad because
you know there's good coming.
19. "Dream Catch Me"- Newton Faulkner- Yay. Dyeland theme
song!!! I think it works well as a companion to "Feels Like Home"
with it's message about feeling accepted and not letting go.
