“Summer afternoon, summer afternoon;
to me those have always been the two
most beautiful words in the English language.”
-- Henry James

Top Ten Things Most Likely to Happen at Dyeland’s Summer Camp

10.  Andrew stomps off after an evening around the campfire because he thinks the ghost stories told there give death a bad reputation.

9.  Exasperated, Tess quits her job at the craft hut after discovering the Dyelanders will only ever make stuff for Andrew and Monica will only ever make coffee mugs and assorted other coffee related products.

8.  The Dyelanders, trying to show their love of Andrew, make smores for him.  Not wanting to be impolite, Andrew eats one smore from each Dyelander.  By the end of the week he’s gained 25 pounds and runs away screaming whenever he sees chocolate bars, graham crackers, or marshmallows.

7.  Awkwardness ensues when, during a hike, Gloria insists upon sharing detailed information about the mating habits of every last species seen.  TMI, Gloria!

6.  On the last night of camp, the Dyelanders have a traditional Last Night Dance. Cafeteria tables are pushed back, soft music plays, handmade lanterns give the room an enchanting, romantic glow.  Unfortunately, this is all in vain since Adam and Andrew are the only guys to attend.  Sigh… so much for camp romances.

5.  Adam has a conniption when some of the Dyelanders show up for swim lessons in bikinis.  He thought strapless dresses were worrisome…

4.  Phil decides to lead a small group on a nature walk.  Somehow they end up in Zimbabwe.

3.  A fight breaks out over who gets to be Andrew’s partner in the three-legged race.

2.  When Andrew agrees to be the lifeguard, he’s stunned to find not a single Dyelander knows how to swim.  This despite the fact that he’s almost positive they could swim before he was the lifeguard…
And...

1.  The first day no one gets much of anything done because the Dyelanders spend a considerable amount of time staring at Andrew who is actually wearing shorts.

A couple songs to sing around the Dyeland camp fire:

If You’re Sappy and You Know It
(Sung to “If You’re Happy and You Know It”)

If you’re sappy and you know it, hug Andrew
If you’re sappy and you know it, hug Andrew
If you’re sappy and you know it
Then your sighs will surely show it
If you’re sappy and you know it, hug Andrew!

If you’re hyper and you know it, blame Monica
If you’re hyper and you know it, blame Monica
If you’re hyper and you know it
Your coffee cup will surely show it
If you’re hyper and you know it, blame Monica!

If you’re happy and you know it, sing like Tess
If you’re happy and you know it, sing like Tess
If you’re happy and you know it
Then your song will surely show it
If you’re happy and you know it, sing like Tess!

If you’re crazy and you know it, then join JABB
If you’re crazy and you know it, then join JABB
If you’re crazy and you know it
Then your bucket will surely show it
If you’re crazy and you know it, then join JABB!

The Andrew Song
(sung to the tune of “Bear Song,” echoes in parenthesis)

The other day (the other day)
I met Andrew (I met Andrew)
Out in the Fields (out in the Fields)
Not far from here (not far from here)

The other day I met Andrew
Out in the Fields not far from here.

He said to me (He said to me)
“Oh please listen (oh please listen)
To what I say (to what I say)
And don’t forget (and don’t forget )

He said to me “Oh please listen
To what I say and don’t forget.”

And so I sat (and so I sat)
There in that field (there in that field)
Gave him my ear (gave him my ear)
Attention, too (attention, too)

And so I sat there in that field
Gave him my ear, attention, too.

And then he glowed (and then he glowed)
And began to say (and began to say)
“I’m sent by God (I’m sent by God)
And He loves you” (and He loves you)

And then he glowed and began to say
“I’m sent by God and He loves you.”

And so I smiled (and so I smiled)
And felt such joy (and felt such joy)
My face lit up (my face lit up)
As bright as his (as bright as his)

And so I smiled and felt such joy
My face lit up as bright as his

And then I saw (and then I saw)
His lovely hair (his lovely hair)
His sweet green eyes (his sweet green eyes)
And stunning smile (and stunning smile)

And then I saw his lovely hair
His sweet green eyes and stunning smile

So then I blushed (so then I blushed)
And giggled, too (and giggled, too)
I’ve fallen for (I’ve fallen for)
Dear old Andrew (dear old Andrew)

So then I blushed and giggled, too
I’ve fallen for dear old Andrew

The years have come (the years have come)
The years have gone (the years have gone)
But still I love (but still I love)
That angel dear (that angel dear)

The years have come, the years have done
But still I love that angel dear

So now I sing (so now I sing)
Very loud and clear (very loud and clear)
That I love Andrew (that I love Andrew)
And God loves me! (and God loves me!)

So now I sing, very loud and clear
That I love Andrew and God loves me!
